About Healing

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Context: God reassures his covenant people in a time of fear with his presence, help, and sustaining strength.

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; but those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

Context: Isaiah contrasts universal human exhaustion with the renewing strength God gives to people who wait for him.

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Context: The psalmist admits bodily and emotional limits while locating lasting security in God rather than in present circumstances.

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Context: Paul does not receive the removal he requested, but he learns that Christ’s grace remains sufficient within ongoing weakness.

Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Context: James places care for sickness inside the praying community rather than treating illness as a private test of willpower or faith.

He said, “If you will diligently listen to Yahweh your God’s voice, and will do that which is right in his eyes, and will pay attention to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you, which I have put on the Egyptians; for I am Yahweh who heals you.”

Context: At Marah, God reveals himself as Israel’s healer within a specific covenant call to listen and obey after the exodus.

Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

Context: Matthew presents Jesus’ healing ministry as an expression of compassion toward real people in need.

He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be cured of your disease.”

Context: Jesus publicly restores dignity and peace to a woman who had suffered for years after she reaches out to him in faith.

Yahweh will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

Context: The psalm connects compassion for vulnerable people with confidence that God sustains those who are ill.

“For I will restore health to you, and I will heal you of your wounds,” says Yahweh; “because they have called you an outcast, saying, ‘It is Zion, whom no man seeks after.’”

Context: This promise first addresses wounded, exiled Zion and belongs to Jeremiah’s larger vision of national restoration.

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.

Context: John opens a personal letter by expressing care for Gaius’s whole life, including both bodily health and spiritual wellbeing.

Yahweh my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me.

Context: David looks back with gratitude after crying to God for help, turning recovery into public praise.

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

Context: This psalm celebrates God rebuilding Jerusalem and gathering people who have been scattered, joining communal restoration with care for wounded hearts.

Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

Context: The psalm does not deny heartbreak; it promises God’s nearness to people whose inner life feels crushed.

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

Context: David’s prayer after sin seeks inward renewal, not merely relief from consequences.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed,”

Context: Jesus announces his mission using Isaiah’s language of good news, freedom, sight, and restoration for people who are crushed.

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

Context: Jesus speaks peace to his disciples on the night before the crucifixion, when uncertainty and grief are close at hand.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Context: Jesus invites burdened people into his gentle way of discipleship and the deep rest found under his care.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Context: The shepherd psalm locates comfort in God’s presence through the valley, not in a promise that valleys never come.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.

Context: John’s vision places complete healing in God’s future new creation, where death, grief, and pain are finally ended.
