About Love

We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.

Context: John speaks of trusting God’s love and continuing to live within it.

Know therefore that Yahweh your God himself is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness to a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commandments,

Context: Moses reminds Israel that covenant love rests in God’s faithfulness across generations.

Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

Context: The psalm repeats this refrain as it remembers God’s creation, rescue, and provision.

You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people; but you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am Yahweh.

Context: Neighbor love is presented in concrete terms: refusing revenge and letting go of grudges.

The second is like this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these.

Context: Jesus joins love of neighbor to love of God as the great commandments.

You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven.

Context: In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus extends love beyond reciprocity to prayer and active goodwill toward enemies.

with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love,

Context: Paul describes the relational habits that protect unity in the church.

Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.

Context: Christian love is pictured as a daily walk shaped by Christ’s self-giving.

By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him? My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.

Context: John moves from Christ’s sacrifice to practical generosity and truth-filled action.

In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Context: Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian elders frames generosity as work that protects the weak.

Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried.

Context: Ruth pledges faithful presence to Naomi across family, place, people, faith, and death.

Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm; for love is strong as death. Jealousy is as cruel as Sheol. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a very flame of Yah.

Context: The poem uses intense imagery to describe committed, exclusive love and its unyielding strength.
