About Hope

This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope. It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. “Yahweh is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I will hope in him.”

Context: Hope appears in the center of communal grief. The writer remembers God’s compassion without denying the devastation surrounding him.

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

Context: The psalmist speaks honestly to a downcast soul while continuing to wait for praise that has not yet fully returned.

Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Context: Paul does not call suffering good in itself; he traces how God can form endurance, tested character, and hope within it.

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory; while we don’t look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Context: Paul speaks from a life marked by hardship, comparing present affliction with the lasting glory God is preparing.

Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.

Context: Hebrews introduces a long account of people who acted on God’s promises before they could see the final outcome.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Context: Peter grounds Christian hope in God’s mercy and the resurrection, giving suffering believers a hope that is alive rather than merely optimistic.

But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love.

Context: After describing partial knowledge and enduring love, Paul names faith, hope, and love as the graces that remain.

to whom God was pleased to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory;

Context: Paul describes the gospel mystery among the nations as Christ present in his people and the sure hope of coming glory.

But those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

Context: Isaiah speaks to weary exiles and points beyond exhausted self-reliance toward renewed strength found while waiting for God.

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in Yahweh.

Context: The psalm ends by gathering everyone who waits for God into a shared call to courage.

rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer;

Context: Paul places hope, patient endurance, and persistent prayer inside the ordinary practices of a sincere Christian community.

I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of Yahweh in the land of the living. Wait for Yahweh. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for Yahweh.

Context: David’s confidence and waiting sit beside danger and unanswered cries, making courage a repeated practice rather than a simple mood.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

Context: This promise was spoken to exiles facing a long wait. Its hope rests in God’s faithful purpose through a difficult season, not in instant escape.

Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.

Context: Wisdom urges the listener not to envy destructive paths because faithful living has a future beyond the present comparison.

For we were saved in hope, but hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for that which he sees? But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.

Context: Paul places patient hope inside creation’s groaning and the unfinished experience of redemption.

This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and entering into that which is within the veil;

Context: The writer connects hope to God’s unchanging promise, picturing it as an anchor secured in God’s own presence.

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

Context: Paul encourages patient faithfulness in doing good, recognizing both real weariness and the promise of a future harvest.

let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful.

Context: The call to hold hope is grounded in the character of the One who promises and practiced within a community that encourages one another.

For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through perseverance and through encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

Context: Paul describes Scripture as a source of patient endurance and encouragement that forms hope over time.

But let us, since we belong to the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

Context: Paul pictures hope as protective equipment for people who live alertly as children of light.
