Forgiveness in Scripture
Biblical forgiveness begins with God’s mercy. In Christ, confessed sin is pardoned and a relationship with God is restored. People who receive that grace are then called to release personal revenge and extend mercy to others.
Forgiveness tells the truth about wrong. It is not the same as forgetting, excusing, immediately trusting again, or forcing reconciliation where there is no repentance, repair, mutual willingness, or safety.
Mercy at the cross
Luke 23:34 records Jesus praying while people are actively crucifying him. His mercy does not call the violence good; it reveals the heart of the one who bears sin and opens the way for forgiveness.
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” Dividing his garments among them, they cast lots.
A life beyond keeping score
Jesus is not giving Peter a ceiling of 490 offenses. Matthew 18 moves from repeated forgiveness into a parable about an unpayable debt, showing that mercy received from God reshapes the way people hold the debts of others.
