Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

Context: After Judas leaves the supper and Jesus predicts Peter’s denial, Jesus promises the Holy Spirit and gives his disciples peace (John 13:21–38; 14:15–31). The approaching arrest has not disappeared.

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Context: Paul writes from imprisonment and has just urged two members of the Philippian church to agree in the Lord. He calls the church to prayer with thanksgiving and speaks of God’s peace guarding hearts and thoughts in Christ (4:2–9).

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you. Trust in Yahweh forever; for in Yah, Yahweh, is an everlasting Rock.

Context: These lines belong to a song to be sung in Judah, introduced in Isaiah 26:1. The song contrasts trust in God, the everlasting Rock, with the lofty city brought low (26:5–6); it is not a promise that believers never feel afraid.

Peace in Scripture

What does the Bible say about peace?

Different passages address different questions. Romans 5:1–5 speaks of peace with God through Jesus, even amid suffering. Philippians 4:2–9 addresses prayer, God’s guarding peace, and the life of a church. Romans 12:17–21 calls believers to live peaceably with others as far as it depends on them.

These are related teachings, not stages everyone must experience in order. A person may pursue reconciliation or pray honestly while still feeling distressed. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word shalom can refer to well-being, safety, or peaceful relationships; the lexical entry for shalom lists a range of uses, not one definition to impose on every verse.

Philippians 4:6–7 · WEB

Peace That Surpasses All Understanding

Paul calls the church to prayer, petition, and thanksgiving. His words about God’s peace are not instructions for measuring another person’s faith by whether they still feel anxious. Read the paragraph alongside his appeal for agreement in verses 2–3.

Read Philippians 4:6–7 in context
01Prayer and petitionVerse 6 invites requests to God, rather than requiring people to conceal their concerns.
02With thanksgivingThanksgiving accompanies the requests; Paul does not say every difficulty is already resolved.
03Hearts and thoughtsVerse 7 names what God’s peace will guard in Christ Jesus.
04A shared lifeVerses 2–3 call for agreement and practical help within the church. This is more than a private calming exercise.

Jesus’ promise to troubled hearts

My Peace I Give You

Jesus gives peace before the disciples understand the coming cross, resurrection, or their future. His gift is rooted in his presence and promise rather than in a fragile sense that nothing will change.

Jesus gives his disciples peace as they face his coming departure.

A blessing and a royal promise

Bible Verses About God’s Peace

These passages address different communities: Israel receiving a priestly blessing, Judah hearing a royal promise, and a church receiving Paul’s closing blessing. Read each in its own setting.

2 Thessalonians 3:16

WEB

A closing blessing asks for peace after difficult instructions for a church.

Read passage
Preview passage
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with you all.

Context: This closing blessing follows instructions about people unwilling to work and those disrupting the community. Even correction is to treat someone as a brother, not an enemy (2 Thessalonians 3:10–15). The blessing is not a guarantee of a conflict-free life.

Isaiah 9:6

WEB

A royal promise connects the Prince of Peace with justice and an enduring reign.

Preview passage
For a child is born to us. A son is given to us; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Context: The next verse describes a reign on David’s throne, upheld with justice and righteousness. Christians read this royal promise in relation to Jesus; Luke 1:32–33 also speaks of his everlasting reign on David’s throne.

Numbers 6:24–26

WEB

Israel’s priestly blessing joins peace with God’s care and gracious attention.

‘Yahweh bless you, and keep you. Yahweh make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. Yahweh lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

Context: God tells Moses to give Aaron and his sons these words for blessing the children of Israel (Numbers 6:22–27). Peace concludes the priestly blessing alongside God’s keeping and gracious attention.

For crowded thoughts and restless nights

Bible Verses About Peace of Mind

Alongside the passages on prayer and sleep above, Jesus’ invitation speaks to people carrying heavy burdens. He invites them to learn from him, rather than simply telling them to feel calm.

Matthew 11:28–29

WEB

Jesus invites burdened people to find rest by learning from his gentleness.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

Context: Jesus invites the burdened to come to him, take his yoke, and learn from him. Rest is connected with following a gentle teacher, not with having no responsibilities; verse 30 continues the image of his yoke and burden.

Nearness in grief and pressure

Bible Verses About Peace and Comfort

Psalm 34 speaks to the brokenhearted. Paul describes comfort received during suffering and shared with others. Neither passage asks a grieving person to pretend the loss does not hurt.

2 Corinthians 1:3–4

WEB

Comfort received in affliction becomes care that can be shared with others.

Preview passage
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Context: Paul and Timothy open their letter with praise for comfort that can be shared with others in affliction. Paul then describes suffering in Asia so severe that he despaired of life (2 Corinthians 1:8–11); comfort does not mean the suffering was small.

Strength, peace, and hope

Bible Verses About Peace and Strength

Psalm 29 ends by joining strength and peace. Romans 15 is a prayer for a community to abound in hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13

WEB

Paul prays for joy, peace, and Spirit-given hope as believers welcome one another.

Preview passage
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Context: Paul has urged believers to welcome one another as Christ welcomed them and has cited Scripture about the nations praising God (Romans 15:7–12). His prayer for joy, peace, and hope follows this appeal to Jews and Gentiles together.

Peace that can coexist with trouble

Bible Verses About Peace in Hard Times

The valley remains dangerous in Psalm 23, and Jesus explicitly warns his disciples of trouble in John 16. Their words about comfort and peace do not erase those difficulties.

Psalm 23:4

WEB

The shepherd’s presence brings comfort while the dangerous valley remains.

Read passage
Preview passage
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Context: The speaker addresses God as a shepherd whose rod and staff bring comfort in the valley. The danger is still present, as are enemies in the next verse; the poem does not identify a particular valley or promise that death can always be avoided.

Reconciliation through Christ

Bible Verses About Peace With God

These letters describe peace through Christ’s reconciling work. Ephesians also names the division between Jews and Gentiles; its language is about people being brought together, not just private feelings.

Colossians 1:19–20

WEB

Reconciliation and peace are connected with Christ’s death on the cross.

Read passage
Preview passage
For all the fullness was pleased to dwell in him, and through him to reconcile all things to himself by him, whether things on the earth or things in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of his cross.

Context: These lines follow a description of the Son’s role in creation and as head of the church. Paul then addresses people formerly alienated from God and speaks of reconciliation through Christ’s death (Colossians 1:21–23).

Peace practiced with other people

Bible Verses About Making Peace

These passages call for peace alongside righteousness, mutual care, and turning away from wrongdoing. Romans 12 also recognizes the limits of what one person can do. Peacemaking does not require staying in danger or concealing abuse.

Romans 14:19

WEB

A church facing disagreements is called to peace and mutual care.

So then, let’s follow after things which make for peace, and things by which we may build one another up.

Context: Romans 14 addresses disagreements about eating and observing days. Paul asks believers not to despise or judge one another, or use their freedom to cause another person to stumble. This is not an instruction to ignore every kind of wrongdoing.

Hebrews 12:14

WEB

Weary readers are urged to pursue peace together with holy living.

Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord,

Context: After urging weary readers to strengthen weak hands and knees, Hebrews calls for peace and holiness, then warns against falling short of grace and a root of bitterness (12:12–17). Peace is a responsibility alongside holy living, not a substitute for it.

Psalm 85:8

WEB

A community longing for restoration listens for peace and turns away from folly.

Preview passage
I will hear what God, Yahweh, will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, his saints; but let them not turn again to folly.

Context: This psalm, headed “For the sons of Korah,” remembers past restoration and asks God to restore his people again. The speaker listens for peace while warning against a return to folly; the heading does not give a date for the crisis.

Questions & context

Bible Verses About Peace FAQ

What is the best Bible verse about peace?

John 14:27 is a strong starting point because Jesus gives his own peace to troubled disciples. Philippians 4:6–7, Isaiah 26:3, and Psalm 4:8 speak directly to prayer, peace of mind, trust, and rest.

What does the peace of God mean?

The peace of God is peace that comes from God’s presence and care. Philippians 4 describes it guarding hearts and thoughts as people bring requests to God with thanksgiving.

What is the peace that surpasses all understanding?

Philippians 4:6–7 says God’s peace will guard hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus as Paul calls the church to prayer with thanksgiving. It is an assurance to bring concerns to God, not a test for diagnosing someone’s faith from how anxious they feel.

What is the difference between peace with God and peace of mind?

Romans 5:1 connects peace with God to being justified by faith through Jesus Christ. “Peace of mind” is an everyday expression for feeling less troubled. Those are related concerns, but they are not interchangeable: Romans 5 goes on to speak about suffering, and feeling distressed does not by itself show that someone is separated from God.

What does shalom mean in the Bible?

Shalom is a Hebrew word often translated “peace.” Depending on the passage, it can refer to well-being, safety, or peaceful relationships, not only an absence of war. These are different uses of the word, not a promise that every verse about peace guarantees health or prosperity.

Which Bible verse is about peace and comfort?

John 14:27 joins Christ’s peace with comfort for troubled hearts. Psalm 34:18, Psalm 23:4, and 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 also speak to God’s nearness and comfort in pain.

Which Bible verse is about peace and strength?

Psalm 29:11 says that Yahweh gives strength to his people and blesses them with peace. Romans 15:13 and John 16:33 also join peace with Spirit-given hope and courage.

Which Bible translation is used here?

The Scripture selections use the World English Bible (WEB), a public-domain translation. Some selected verses begin or end within a longer speech or sentence; use the passage links to keep reading. Other editions may use different wording. Context notes, quiz explanations, and the example prayer are our own writing, not additional Bible quotations.
