Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; but those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

Context: In verse 27, Jacob and Israel complain that God overlooks their plight. The answer contrasts the everlasting Creator, who does not grow tired, with even the strongest young people, who do. Those who wait for Yahweh depend on his strength.

For the Chief Musician. By the sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Context: The heading associates this psalm with the sons of Korah. Its opening confession is followed by images of collapsing mountains, raging waters and warring nations. God is called a refuge amid trouble, not proof that trouble is absent.

Strength in Scripture

What does the Bible say about strength?

In Philippians 4:10–14, Paul describes learning contentment when hungry or well fed. In 2 Corinthians 12:7–10, he asks for relief and receives an answer about sufficient grace. Neither passage makes strength depend on having an easy life.

Other passages address a particular task: Joshua must lead Israel and obey the Law; Zerubbabel will finish the temple. Reading those settings helps us distinguish what God promised those people from what we hope will happen in our own lives. The psalms also give words for asking for help, and Galatians 6:2 calls believers to carry one another’s burdens.

Ephesians 6:10–18 develops this dependence through the picture of God’s armor. The Armor of God guide follows the call to be strong in the Lord into standing firm, taking up the whole armor, and persevering in prayer. It explains why this is a spiritual struggle, not permission to attack other people.

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”

Context: The returned community weeps as Ezra and the Levites read and explain the Law. Because that day is holy, the leaders tell them to celebrate, eat and share with those who have nothing prepared. The call to joy has this particular setting.

Strength that comes from God

Bible Verses About God’s Strength

A call to stand firm, songs of deliverance, and a prayer for the church show different ways the Bible speaks of strength from God.

Ephesians 6:10–12

WEB

Paul locates the church’s strength in the Lord for a struggle against spiritual evil.

Read passage
Preview passage
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Context: Paul calls believers to stand against spiritual evil, explicitly not against flesh and blood. Verses 13–18 describe the armor and continuing prayer; verses 19–20 ask for prayer for Paul as an ambassador in chains.

Psalm 18:1–2

WEB

David gives thanks for deliverance through images of a rock, fortress and shield.

For the Chief Musician. By David the servant of Yahweh, who spoke to Yahweh the words of this song in the day that Yahweh delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said, I love you, Yahweh, my strength. Yahweh is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.

Context: The heading identifies David and deliverance from his enemies, including Saul. Rock, fortress, shield and high tower are images of God’s protection in this song of thanksgiving.

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them, for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

Context: Moses addresses all Israel before they cross the Jordan under Joshua. The people are told not to fear the nations ahead of them. This is a promise tied to Israel’s entry into the land, not a guarantee for every modern conflict.

Grace for your limits

Bible Verses About Strength in Weakness

Paul’s thorn, Abraham’s promised offspring and Zerubbabel’s temple work are different situations. Read each account before applying its words to your own.

2 Corinthians 12:9

Preview passage
He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Context: Paul has asked the Lord three times to remove his thorn in the flesh. The reply promises sufficient grace and power in weakness. The passage does not identify the thorn or say that it was removed.

Romans 4:20–22

WEB

Abraham’s trust rests in God’s ability to fulfil the promise of offspring.

Read passage
Preview passage
Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God, and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform. Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”

Context: Paul discusses God’s promise of offspring to Abraham despite Abraham and Sarah’s old age. He connects Abraham’s faith with righteousness, then applies the account to those who believe in the God who raised Jesus (verses 23–25).

Zechariah 4:6

WEB

Zerubbabel’s temple commission depends on God’s Spirit rather than human might.

Read passage
Preview passage

Questions & context

Bible Verses About Strength FAQ

What is a good Bible verse for strength?

Start with Philippians 4:13 and read verses 10–14 alongside it. Paul is describing contentment in hunger and plenty, not unlimited personal achievement. For a prayer in trouble, read Psalm 46; for strength amid weakness, read 2 Corinthians 12:7–10.

What is a good Bible verse for hard times?

Psalm 46:1 calls God “our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Isaiah 40:30–31 also speaks to exhaustion and renewed strength.

How can I find strength in God?

You could begin with an honest prayer about what you face, then read a whole passage rather than one line. Psalm 27 includes both confidence and a plea for help. Galatians 6:2 calls believers to bear one another’s burdens, so asking a trusted person for support can be part of that response.

What does “when I am weak, then I am strong” mean?

Paul says this in 2 Corinthians 12:10 after describing three requests for his thorn in the flesh to depart. The Lord answers with sufficient grace and power in weakness. Paul locates his strength in Christ’s power, not in the removal of every hardship. The text does not identify the thorn.

Which Psalm is about strength?

Psalm 46 begins with God as refuge and strength. Psalms 18, 27, and 29 also describe God as strength, protector, and giver of peace.

What does “the joy of the Lord is your strength” mean?

Nehemiah 8 records the people weeping as they hear the Law. The leaders tell them that this day is holy and call them to celebrate and share food with those who have nothing prepared. Verse 10 belongs to that setting; it is not a demand to feel happy at every moment.

Are these verses promises that nothing difficult will happen?

No. This collection includes prayers, songs, commands and promises, not one blanket assurance of an easy life. Some promises address Israel or a named leader in a particular situation. Paul’s account in 2 Corinthians 12 explicitly includes continuing weakness and distress.

Which Bible translation is used here?

The Scripture quotations use the public-domain World English Bible Classic (WEB), including Yahweh for God’s name. Some selections include a psalm heading or begin or end within a longer speech. Linked references let you read further. The context notes and example prayer are our own writing, not Bible verses.
